My Story

The perfect storm. Cancer can be insidious and unexpected. My story started when I was 29 years old. I was in my third year of residency, completing two residencies at the same time, working long hours on little to no sleep, poor diet, under constant pressure and I had just delivered my first child. And then I was diagnosed with cancer. My only thought was how the cancer was a nuisance, something that needed to be taken care of so I could continue my current work schedule and not ‘let anyone down’ or ‘show anyone I couldn’t handle it’. So, I worked through the first surgery, then the second, third, and fourth for metastatic disease, not seeing the connection between my health and my life choices. Until I did.

This journey allowed me to experience vulnerability, humility, and gave me insight into how it feels to be a patient. It cultivated compassion and a deeper understanding of my patient’s suffering. It also allowed me to see the perfect storm of stress, nutrition, poor lifestyle choices, environmental triggers, that leads to the development of disease. It empowered me to listen, to be present, and to teach my patients about how to prevent, treat, and reverse chronic disease.   It was important for me to bring health education out of the exam room to the community.

This passion led me to champion a community garden in my town. A safe green space with 2.5 acres of organic gardening, beehives, greenhouse, compost programs, food bank donation beds, rain catch program, and an outdoor teaching kitchen where local residents meet, gather, and learn about nutrition, gardening, community, conservation and so much more. It is my desire to break the mold of conventional medicine by integrating Eastern and Western medical practices, plant-based nutrition, stress reduction, sleep regulation, movement, social connection, and purpose into my health prescription. As an Integrative/Functional MD, my mission is to transform health and beauty inside-out, meet my patients where they are, and empower them with knowledge so they can take back control of their health and lives.
